6 things to look forward to at Heritage Park this Spring

There’s a reason- nay, two reasons- why Calgarians never tire of (re)visiting Heritage Park. For one, being Canada’s largest living museum, there’s a lot to rediscover here. Two, the park continues to give us fun exhibits and experiences all year round. And this year’s going to be no different.

As we approach warmer weather, we compiled a list of all things delightful happening at the park this spring that we’re eagerly looking forward to.

#1 The grand opening

You know how Heritage Park makes you crave some of the attractions each year by shutting them down for the winter. Well, it’s about time for them all to reopen. And so they will on May 21, just in time for the Victoria Day long weekend. So, gear up for a stroll down the very charming Historical Village and snag a few novelty items from the Gasoline Alley Museum gift shop.

#2 The STORYSEEKER exhibit

The Innovation Crossing building at the new Prospect Ridge area will be home to an immersive exhibit about Canada’s energy past. By way of historical characters, period-specific artefacts, mesmerizing stories & exhibits and exceptional technological creativity, STORYSEEKER brings the energy past of Canada to life. The exhibit also has a dedicated website to educate youth about the past, present and future needs and trends of the industry. While the website is a helpful educational resource, the immersive exhibit is what caught our intrigue.

#3 The Cocktails & Corsets Fundraiser

Wine, fine dine, DJ, special entertainment and celebrating and honouring Albertan women making history! Well, that’s our kind of night. Cocktails & Corsets will also take you on an exploration of how corsets have been supporting women through history. Plus, you can partake in a lot of fun activities and bag a few prizes. The award reception (a separate, intimate event) will do you one better. It takes you on a special vintage corset tour and gives you an opportunity to network with community leaders.

#4 The Festival of Quilts exhibit

They call it the Festival of Quilts, we call it a display of vibrance. From bright colours to fun patterns, this is an exhibit by the people, for the people. Whether you are a contributor showcasing your quilting expertise or a curious viewer, the display will leave you in awe. The fact that it is also Canada’s largest quilt display just adds to its charm.

#5 Day Out With Thomas

Because there’s something for everyone here, the park is back with its annual Day Out With Thomas event. And if you have young ’uns around you, this is a great way to brighten up their faces. Of course, the highlight is the interactive train ride with the brightly painted Thomas the Tank Engine, but there’s a lot here even off the train. Think lawn games, mazes, face painting and photo ops among others.

#6 The exceptional culinary experience

Here’s the thing about Heritage Park, much like its exhibits and attractions, it gives you enough choices when it comes to pleasing your palate. Looking for a fine dining experience? Hit Selkirk or The Railway Cafe! A more casual vibe? Check out the Gunn’s Dairy Barn or Club Café. A hearty brunch? The historic Wainwright Hotel, it is. In fact, Wainwright is currently offering what they’re calling a Homestyle Breakfast. But trust us, it’s way, way better than anything you’ll find at home. Oh, and the many concession options they have. Frankly, we wouldn’t judge if you hit the park just for the great food and the amazing experience the cafes and restaurants here offer.
