Opportunity, respect, and attention should not only be given to a select few simply because of the colour in their skin. Black Lives Matter. Today at Curiocity, in solidarity with #blackouttuesday and all peaceful rallies in support of equality, we have decided to use our platform to only shed more light on an important global issue. In an effort to do this, we have decided to share with you guys some incredible organizations and local human rights charities that Albertans can donate to or join right now.

National Black Coalition of Canada Society in Edmonton

The National Black Coalition of Canada Society is an Edmonton-based organization that strives to create a positive impact in the black community and supports and encourages children and young adults to realize their full potential. Although there’s no clear way of donating, we do encourage you to get involved.

Calgary Multicultural Orchestra Foundation

The Calgary Multicultural Orchestra Foundation or CMOF is a free after school program for children ages 6 to 17. Their goal is to create a sense of belonging, pride, and reduce their exposure to negative influences. They provide free-loan instruments, free music lessons, and snacks.

Alberta Civil Rights Liberties Research Centre

This registered charity promotes respect for human rights and civil liberties within the province of Alberta. Through their research, they’ve been able to educate students, teachers, and parents on human rights issues and hold conferences on rights and discrimination in the workplace.

The Come Up 

“To encourage individual and community empowerment from within.” The Come Up, an Edmonton based organization is responsible for holding youth-led consultations with African and Caribbean students in high school and post-secondary. The goal is to share and create opportunities in all aspects of society and contribute to the wellbeing of the community.

United Nations Association in Canada Calgary Branch

Established in 1980 with a mission to connect Calgarians to the work of the United Nations, the UNAC draws aims to draw the city’s attention to the UN’s international events such as Human Rights Day and the International Day of Peace, ultimately celebrating and educating people on equality.
