10 socially-distant things to do in Edmonton this weekend (April 9-11)

We hope that you’ve had a good week so far, Edmonton! Even with some restrictions coming back this weekend, we’ve got quite a few safe and fun things to do in the city this weekend. After all, that fresh spring air is just calling our names! And, it’s time for us to respond.

Here are 10 things to do in Edmonton this weekend.

TRY AND SPOT THE EDMOWOOD SIGN

While the people behind it are no longer a secret (hello, Virgin Radio), we still think that you should go check out this fun sign that’s been popping up around the city. We don’t know how much longer it will be touring around, so keep your eyes peeled on social media!

BID ON AN ONLINE AUCTION

The local company Curiosity Inc. (still a good name) has partnered with Kastner Auctions to sell a boatload of items and artifacts from Alberta’s Stan Reynolds Museum. If you ever needed to get an ancient Roman coin, or some weird art, or even a fossil or two, this is your chance.

GO FOR AN OUTDOOR WORKOUT

Got some excess energy to burn? Skip pushups in your kitchen and go explore some of Edmonton’s best places for an outdoor workout. From yoga in the park to running trails and more, we’ve got you covered from all angles.

BE IMPRESSED BY SOME NEW PUBLIC ART

Some absolutely massive inflatable sculptures have arrived in downtown Edmonton. Reaching up to 12 metres high, these gentle giants are a nod to a 1973 animated movie called Fantastic Planet. Check them out as they playfully explore and lounge around.

When: On until April 12th
Where: Locations around downtown Edmonton

GO BIRD WATCHING

Welcome to the easiest bird-watching expedition you’ll go on all year. Three massive, glowing, inflatable chickadees have landed on the roof of the CO*LAB Building, and they’re just waiting for you to see them. Our advice? Try and get there for dusk, and mix in the sunset with the trip.

When: On until April 30th
Where: 9641 102A Ave

CHECK OUT A NEW BREAKFAST SPOT

Originally from Quebec, Pür & Simple has chosen Edmonton to open up its first Alberta location! The restaurant seems to be a hit all over Canada, so we’re curious to see just how great it is. After all, you can never test out too many waffles and eggs benedicts.

When: Now open
Where: 1 Kingsway Garden Mall

STREAM A MOVIE

While we’d classify the majority of them as ‘films’ (lifts pinky) instead of movies, the Metro Cinema has some great options that give you more to talk about than ‘Green guy go smash’. But hey, who are we to judge the psychological transformation of Dr. Banner?

When: Streaming throughout April
Where: Online
Cost: Varies

OR WATCH A PLAY

Missing watching live shows at the Citadel Theatre? While you wait for their return, you can still support them by streaming a show or two from their virtual options. That way, you’ll be that much more excited when they finally get the green light again.

When: Streaming throughout April
Where: Online
Cost: Varies

HEAD TO THE ZOO

That’s right folks, the Edmonton Public Zoo has officially reopened! While the indoor exhibits are closed for the foreseeable future, you’ll still be able to enjoy all the outdoor ones. Watching red pandas zoom around? Yes please!

When: Now open
Where: 13315 Buena Vista Road
Cost: $10.95 (reduced price)

TAKE YOUR PUP TO THE PARK

Speaking of outdoor fun, we’re sure your dog (or your friend’s dog) is just as excited about the spring as you are. Treat them to a little tour of some of the best dog parks in Edmonton. We’ve rounded up a few of our favourites to help you get started, too.

That’s what we’ve got for this weekend, Edmonton! We hope that you can make the most of it.
