Make a splash this summer at Alberta’s natural waterslide

Alberta is known for its incredible nature. Between the breathtaking Rocky Mountains, stunning national parks, and elusive hidden gems, there’s so much to see, do, and discover. Including…waterslides?

Yes, Mother Nature knows how to have fun in the sun. Located near Ya Ha Tinda Ranch — the only federally operated working horse farm in Canada — you’ll find the Scalp Creek natural waterslides.

These “slides” are river beds made of rocks that have been completely smoothed over from thousands of years of erosion, and the current does all of the heavy lifting, giving it a slide sensation. The runs can be up to 20 feet long before ending in a natural pool of water at the bottom.

The natural waterslides are hidden gems for a reason — It’s quite a trek to get to them.

For starters, you’ll want to be on horseback. Head northwest from the campground, crossing Bighorn Creek and Scalp Creek by following the Scalp Creek Trail. Continue along the creek rather than go up the cut line. You’ll have to cross the creek four times before you get to the end of the trail where you can tie up your horse. Then, just walk until you see the slides.

It’s a novice to intermediate trail, and roughly 3.5 hours round trip. Fortunately, you have a guaranteed cool-off once you arrive at your destination. That glacier water sure is chilly!
