Toronto reportedly getting WNBA expansion team to play for 2026 season

Now here’s something to get excited about! It looks like Toronto will be getting its very first WNBA team, and here’s what we know so far.

According to a CBC Sports exclusive by Shireen Ahmed, it has been reported that Kilmer Sports Inc., led by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum, has been granted an expansion franchise with the Women’s National Basketball Association.

And it is reported that the women’s team will start playing in May 2026.

Apparently Tanenbaum had pursued the expansion team through MLSE, “but it was turned down by other members of the board.”

The official announcement is expected to be released on May 23rd in Toronto, according to the report.

Just last year, Canada held its first-ever WNBA game right here in Toronto and it sold thousands of tickets. The second game in Canada was held in Alberta earlier this month.

According to Ahmed via CBC, a source shared the team would play at the 8,000-seat arena, Coca-Cola Coliseum.

This is also where Toronto’s Professional Women’s Hockey League franchise is currently playing its first playoff series.

According to the WNBA, it currently has 12 teams, six in each conference. Toronto will be its 13th.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated once more information is released.
