Toronto under winter weather travel advisory for ‘heavy’ snow & ‘strong’ winds

We only have a few weeks left of winter, and it looks like it’s not going down without a fight! Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory in Toronto ahead of strong winds, heavy snow, and treacherous conditions.

The weather authority predicts 5 to 10 cm of snowfall in the city and it will be “heavy” at times.

The snow will begin late on Monday afternoon or early in the evening and will end by early Tuesday morning.

Peak snowfall rates will reach 2 to 4 cm per hour which will be especially intense during the evening commute.

The snow will be accompanied by strong easterly winds of up to 60 km/hour on Monday, followed by strong westerly winds of 60 km/hour on Tuesday.

Residents can expect “reduced visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow and slippery surfaces due to accumulating snow,” says Environment Canada.

However, temperatures are expected to climb into the low positives. That means snow could transform into freezing rain.

“The snow may become mixed with ice pellets late this evening before tapering to light snow, drizzle, or freezing drizzle by early Tuesday morning.”

The winter weather travel advisory in Toronto warns that road conditions may be hazardous “due to sudden changes in the weather.”

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” says Environment Canada.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.”

With the first day of spring less than one month away, we hope that our days of shovelling snow are numbered!
