Toronto’s Winter Stations returns this February with new and exciting installations. The international design and art competition will bring several structures to life next month. Among them, is an out-of-this-world UFO structure that you can climb inside. Here’s what to know.
Since starting back in 2014, Winter Stations has reimagined lifeguard stations in Toronto’s beaches with art and designs on an international scale.
This year, the single-stage international design competition will have seven installations across Kew and Woodbine beaches.

Like every other year, Winter Stations has a theme – this year it is Resonance.
“Resonance captures the echoes of our artistic legacy and the enduring impact of Winter Stations. It invites us to reflect on the moments that have left a lasting mark, the installations that have stirred our hearts, and the memories that have become part of our collective narrative,” reads the site.
“This year, in an exciting twist, we are asking designers to embark on a remarkable journey of reinvention and reimagination. We want you to breathe new life into the echoes of the past by recreating, reimagining and reinventing cherished installations from Winter Stations history.”
In the past, we’ve seen massive installations like the infamous “Pussy Hat” structure and “Conrad”, a raccoon installation in honour of the real trash panda that died on the corner of Yonge and Church in 2015.
To add to the list of iconic structures is Katja Banović and Xavier Madden’s “We Caught A UFO!”
This large-scale installation provides an immersive experience as visitors can have fun and go inside the structure.
Other structures include “Nimbus”, a massive cloud; “Making Waves” and “A Kaleidoscopic Odyssey”.
These installations and more will take over the beaches starting February 19th, 2024, and typically runs until March.
It’s free to attend and definitely picture-worthy.
