Oh, Canada! It’s been a while since we’ve seen who might end up on the next Canadian $5 bill, but we’ve got some good news! Today the Bank of Canada revealed the 8-person short list of possible candidates, and it’s looking pretty stellar. From Canadian icons to Indigenous heroes, we’ve got all the bases covered.
First off, it’s impressive that these 8 people have even made it this far. The initial list of eligible candidates was just under 600 names long, so these are really the cream of the crop. Plus, all candidates were reviewed under 5 categories to ensure that the right pick is made.

The 5 categories, or ‘guiding principles’ were as follows: Positive change, National Icon, Universality, Uniqueness, and Relevancy. Based on those principles, here are the 8 possible portraits for the next Canadian $5 bill.
According to the Bank of Canada release, this list has been submitted to the Minister of Finance who will make a decision in early 2021 on who will be on the next $5 bill.
