Viral social media trend proves just how cold it’s been in Western Canada (PHOTOS)

From candy-coloured sunsets to snow-covered mountains, winter is the most beautiful season – however, we’d be lying if we said that we didn’t loathe the cold. Of course, when the opportunity presents itself, many of you will not be chilled into social media silence – for there are photos to be taken! One of the most popular shots in Western Canada right now? The Mpemba Effect – which, despite sounding like a TikTok filter, is actually a scientific phenomenon in which boiling H20 can be observed freezing faster than cold water in the arctic air.

With temperatures below -30 C, dedicated Insta-baddies from Vancouver to Winnepeg took their backyards, decks and nearby fields to capture a little December magic.

Here are the best photos and videos shared this week of Western Canadians getting their Bill Nye on.

Now, though it looks super cool, it would be irresponsible of us to suggest you do the same – but alas, many of you will still try.

To those of you who would like to take part in the #boilingwaterchallenge, we leave you with this: Please – be freaking careful, guys.

It should go without saying, but throwing boiling water overhead can be dangerous if done incorrectly. Wear a hood, consider covering your face and don’t film alone. Stay warm and be smart out there, friends! A ‘Mpemba effect’ photo is not worth burning your face off.
