Are you a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas? Or maybe you’re curious about the origins of some of our oldest Yuletide traditions. If so, you’re in luck — a local Calgary heritage home is decking the halls with a Victorian Christmas that will take you on a tour through time.
At just $15 per person to register and a variety of tour dates, it’s convenient and easy to make haste to Lougheed House this December in Calgary.
This guided tour will teach you about our Christmas traditions and their Victorian origins. For a house that’s stood for over a hundred years, it’ll be a homage to Christmas past and present.
The former sandstone home of Senator James Alexander Lougheed is one of Calgary’s best-known heritage buildings. Built in 1891, it was by far and away the fanciest mansion in Calgary when it was completed. Lougheed would go on to become one of Calgary’s most prominent and powerful individuals, with a familial legacy that includes his grandson, Peter Lougheed, the 10th premier of Alberta.
The house also has a real Christmas Carol vibe, as it’s rumoured to be haunted. Visitors claim to have seen apparitions in the ballroom and the spirit of Lady Isabella Lougheed in a front window. You might run into the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future at this event that’s fit for a Victorian Earl.
So many of our favourite holiday traditions began in the Victorian era — things like writing Christmas cards, decorating trees, and hanging stockings are classic features of the season for us.
These traditions were relatively new to the Victorians, though some of them, like the evergreen Christmas tree, have even older Pagan origins. On this journey through Lougheed House, you’ll experience a blast from Christmas’ past, all within the spectacularly decorated heritage home.
Learn about the origins of favourite Christmas traditions, examine holiday artifacts of the past, and feel jolly at this event that will honour the past, while keeping the spirit of Christmas alive for future generations.
Who knows what the evening could bring! Whether you’re snowed in or chilled out from some recent chinook winds, the historic Lougheed House will be waiting.

Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Lougheed House — 707 13th Ave. SW
