Vancouver’s plastic bag ban has been pushed back one year

Early this week, Vancouver city council passed a motion that delayed to start of the plastic bag ban around the city. Instead of beginning on January 1 of 2021, the bylaw will come into on the same day in 2022. Here’s a little more information.

The law, which passed late last year, was going to ban plastic bags altogether, and tighten restrictions on other single-use plastics like straws and utensils. Additionally, a new tax was going to be introduced on single-use plastic cups around the city, to try and ‘even the playing field’ for businesses and encourage the use of reusable cups.

But, COVID-19 has thrown a wrench in pretty much every plan for 2020, and this is no exception. The emphasis on takeout dining, delivery services and other ‘touchfree’ options has all but ensured that single-use plastics are essential at this time.

While we were ready to pay a little extra at the grocery store, or try to remember carrying travel mugs around, we understand city council’s decision. For more info on the plastic bag ban, just click here. And stay safe out there, folks!
