Vancouver is under a special weather statement & “high winds” are expected

If you were thinking of skipping the windbreaker and scarf today, think again. A special weather statement has been issued for Metro Vancouver, and it looks like we’re in for an exceptionally windy day.

According to Environment Canada, a low-pressure system offshore is moving northwards, creating strong southeast winds of 60 to 80 km/hr starting early this evening.

The warning is in effect for the evening of Thursday, January 5th and winds are expected to ease around midnight.

As such, Vancouverites should prepare for possible power outages, fallen tree branches, and damage to buildings, like roof shingles or windows.

The wind warning is in effect for the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, New West, the North Shore, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Surrey, Langley, Richmond, and Delta.

In the event of a potential outage, BC Hydro recommends putting together an emergency kit with food and water, first aid materials, LED candles, etc. for the first 72 hours of a storm. You can also use their step-by-step checklist to create an outage plan for you and your household.

Make sure to check for further updates throughout the day regarding the wind warning. Stay safe, everyone!
