Vancouver was just named the sushi capital of the world outside of Japan

If there’s one thing that we think is synonymous with this city’s food scene, it’s sushi. So, we’re not particularly surprised that Vancouver has been named the sushi capital of the world outside of Japan. Instead, it’s more a feeling of “yeah, that sounds about right”.

The claim comes from the food publication Chef’s Pencil. In order to make the claim, they looked at Google Trends relating to sushi searches around the world. The bonus here? The rankings are relative to interest and popularity, not the total number of searches.

And, not only was Vancouver the only city on the list with a Popularity Score of 100 (the highest you can get), it was also the only city in North America to make it into the top 10. Turns out, folks in Europe, and particularly in Ukraine, love their sushi almost as much as we do! Honestly, we never would have guessed that.

One other Canadian city managed to make it on to the list, with Montreal coming in the 11th spot. Even still, that means sushi is more popular in these two cities than others we would have expected to do extremely well, as both Los Angeles and San Diego were closer to the bottom of the list.

Anyway, we’re just taking this as an excuse to order a little takeout from a new neighbourhood sushi spot this weekend! If Vancouver’s going to be the sushi capital of the world, then we need to do our part to help out.
