Vancouver’s huge new YWCA mural comes with an important message

Vancouver loves its murals and we do too. So while our regular mural fest is a ways off, the city just got a spectacular new mural that’s located downtown. Plus, this piece of art is more than just pretty, it also packs a deep meaning and you can interact with it by using your phone.

The mural was created by artist Ola Volo who just so happens to be a graduate of Emily Carr University. Volo has done artworks all over the world, and has huge displays in Calgary, Montreal, and beyond. Vancouver’s new mural is done in Volo’s distinctive style which draws from folklore, multiculturalism, and identity to depict a queen rising with newfound strength.

The mural is painted on the YWCA “Wall for Women” at The Hyatt. As for that message we were talking about, this large eye-catching piece acts as a reminder of intimate partner violence. If you hold up your phone you’ll discover five phone-activated statistics, each giving you insight into partner violence as well as an opportunity to donate to the YWCA.

These donations will be used to build housing for women who have and experiencing violence. So not only do we get a beautiful new mural in our city but it’s also a reminder of just one issue facing women during Women’s History Month.
