VIFF is back this year with in-cinema screenings & tickets are now on sale

Listen up art lovers and film buffs, the Vancouver International Film Festival is back for its 41st edition this year. And it’s bringing back the OG in-cinema experience. Yup, the fest is happening IRL this year. Meaning, you can catch great cinematic work the way it was meant to be viewed— on a big screen!

But for non-Vancouverites and those who prefer to appreciate art from the comfort of their couches, VIFF has you covered too. A selection of films will also be available on the online streaming platform, VIFF Connect.

As can be expected from a film fest of this calibre, there’s plenty to be viewed. From the most anticipated movies of the year to narratives from around the world to upcoming international talent and a lot more. The impressive line-up showcases some 130 feature films and 100 shorts that will be played across seven venues in Vancouver. And each of these entries draws inspiration from the real world.

The festival officially opens with an Indigenous showcasing of Bones of Crows by Métis filmmaker Marie Clements. And closes with the South Korean Broker by VIFF favourite Hirokazu Kore-Eda.

In addition to the intriguing line-up, this year’s fest also brings along other interesting events including talks with industry leaders, a conference about music in film, and two special VIFF Live Events featuring two stellar music performances. A hyper pop live score of Nosferatu in the gothic setting of St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church, and a very special collaboration between Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Michael Abels, composer for Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Us, and Nope, at the Vancouver Playhouse. Talk about a jaw-dropping lineup!

There is also a competitive series this year, Vanguard which features international emerging filmmakers. There are 8 narratives being presented with titles from Australia, India and Mongolia among others.

The festival runs from Thursday, September 29th to Sunday, October 9th, 2022. And tickets are currently on sale. Pro tip: If you’re looking to view more and spend less, grab flexible passes and ticket packages instead of single tickets. Or better yet, get yourself the VIFF+ membership program which saves you a ton.

And for anyone aged 19-25, you can get an additional discount with a free VIFF+ U25 membership.

Here, check out the VIFF website for the complete line-up of movies, schedules and tickets. Oh, and don’t forget to sign-up for VIFF News, the festival’s newsletter to stay in on the latest news on the Vancouver International Film Festival.
