The City just ‘hatched’ a new program that will allow Calgarians up to 4 pet hens

Why did the chicken cross the road? Well, this spring – it could be to get back to its owner because the City of Calgary has officially launched their urban hen licensing program!

Meant to enrich the lives of those who dream of fresh eggs and companionship, this program will give Calgarians the opportunity to adopt and raise up to 4 hens as their pets.

“After the success of the 2022 pilot project that allowed 100 people to keep backyard hens, The City has released an unlimited number of licences this year, ” the city wrote.

Starting today, Calgarians will be able to apply for a license under the updated Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) Bylaw as long as they meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18+ years old or have a parent or guardian apply on their behalf.
  • Complete approved hen-keeping and care training.
  • Own the property hens will be kept on or have written permission from the property owner.
  • Acquire a free Premise Identification (PID) Number from the Government of Alberta.
  • Hen licences must number 2 to 4, as hens are group animals.

“We heard from Calgarians that modern pet ownership means more than just caring for cats and dogs,” said Tara Decker, Coordinator of Administration and Pet Licensing, Animal Services.

“The rules are designed to mitigate concerns before they start – things like not allowing roosters, and ensuring proper housing, training, care conditions and opportunities to address any concerns from your community.”

Interested? For more information on the Calgary urban hen program or to apply, head to the city’s official website and enjoy! We can’t wait to meet all of your fine feathered friends via social media.
