Toronto is the top city in Canada that international travellers are planning trips to right now

International travel is making a comeback everywhere and according to travel search engine KAYAK, people around the world are starting to plan getaways to the Great White North. Surprisingly, though, the top destination on their radar isn’t Alberta’s Rocky Mountains or B.C.’s majestic forests, but the hustle and bustle of Canada’s biggest city.

KAYAK said that a significant spike in travel searches to Canada was recorded between February 15 and February 22 for travel anytime in the future — 57% higher than the month before.

Interestingly, the majority of these travel searches came from cities in the U.S., the Netherlands, and Germany.

“There were significant surges to Canadian cities, with the greatest increases seen from travellers in Washington (204 per cent), Munich (43 per cent), San Diego (42 per cent), Amsterdam (41 per cent) and Hamburg (40 per cent),” said KAYAK.

Of any Canadian city, Toronto yielded the most searches during this time period, followed by Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary.

Here are the top 10 most-searched Canadian cities on KAYAK:

  1. Toronto
  2. Montreal
  3. Vancouver
  4. Calgary
  5. Quebec City
  6. Edmonton
  7. Ottawa
  8. Halifax
  9. Winnipeg
  10. Victoria

According to Matt Clarke, the VP of Marketing at KAYAK North America, this trend is expected to continue into the summer as restrictions ease.

“The search increases we’re seeing indicates pent up demand for Canadian tourism and illustrate the impact entry restrictions have on inbound travel,” he said.

“We’ve consistently seen that as travel restrictions ease, travel demand follows and we expect to see this continue through summer.”

With major events and festivals officially returning in Toronto this summer, this is definitely the year to experience the 6ix.
