A weather warning is in effect for Toronto as freezing rain hits the city

Practice extra caution on the roads today, Toronto. A weather warning is in effect as a freezing rain storm sweeps across southern Ontario.

Environment Canada is calling for freezing rain, which may be mixed with ice pellets and snow.

The federal weather authority issued a warning at 6 AM on January 19th — a warning is issued when severe weather is imminent or already occurring.

Freezing rain Is expected to begin this morning and will areas north of Highway 401 will be the most affected.

Conditions will improve by the afternoon, but “ice accretion up to a few millimetres is possible on untreated surfaces,” says the Toronto weather warning.

Areas near Lake Ontario are unlikely to see freezing rain, as temperatures in the area will hover above freezing.

As temperatures rise, the freezing rain will transition into rain or drizzle.

Locals are asked to take extra care when walking or driving as surfaces may become icy and slippery, such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots.

Plus, you’ll want to give yourself extra time to get to where you’re going as the weather may cause a “significant impact on rush hour traffic.”

In addition to the Toronto weather warning, many parts of southern Ontario are also under similar advisories.

On Friday, Toronto will once again get a shot of winter weather. Scattered flurries are in the forecast until around 2 PM on Friday.

It has been a mixed bag of weather conditions so far this winter. Between the brutal holiday season storm and now freezing rain, we’ve practically seen it all.

We are not quite halfway through the winter season yet, though. We’re crossing our fingers for some more sunshine.
