Toronto’s storm was likely the ‘biggest of the season’ says Environment Canada

It’s no surprise to anyone at this point that Toronto’s snow storm yesterday was a major one, but just how major was it? According to Environment Canada’s Warning Preparedness Meteorologist

In a phone interview with Curiocity, Kimbell said that Monday’s blizzard “would rank very highly in terms of the biggest storms Toronto has seen,” but the city saw just as much snowfall three years ago.

Toronto’s Pearson Airport recorded a total of 33 cm yesterday, which is the exact same amount recorded by the airport on January 28th and 29th, 2019.

As for the highest totals ever recorded, Pearson hit 45 cm in February of 1965 and 43 cm in January of 1966.

However, there was a “corridor of much higher precipitation” outside of the city on Monday. Oshawa, for example, recorded 55 cm. However, Kimbell said that these regions haven’t been recording their weather data long enough to know what kinds of historical records may have been broken.

Kimbell is pretty confident that the storm we saw this week was likely the biggest one we’ll get all season.

“It’s very probable that the storm yesterday was the biggest storm of the winter, it’s very likely,” said Kimbell.  “Will we see more snow storms? Possibly, but there’s no way of knowing at this stage.”

As for what to expect for the remaining few months of winter, Kimbell said that it’s hard to predict a forecast with complete accuracy beyond 10 days.

“There’s no way of knowing what’s in store for the winter,” he said. “Our short-term forecast is pretty good and we do expect a bit of precipitation tonight, a couple of centimeters of snow but nothing major.”
