Toronto Pearson Airport’s passenger fees are increasing & here’s what to know

Planned next year’s vacation? Your travel plans are going to get a tad more expensive thanks to passenger fees increasing at Toronto’s Pearson airport slated for January.

Starting January 1, 2022 the Greater Toronto Airports Authority will increase usage fees by 4%. According to the GTAA, you can thank the rate of inflation and the lasting impacts of COVID-19 for the new rate.

Passengers departing will see an increase of $5 and connecting passengers by $1.  “Airport operations have improved significantly since the summer, but Toronto Pearson is still feeling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Deborah Flint, President and CEO, GTAA in a release issued back in September.

“As a not-for-profit entity, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that we have sufficient revenues to maintain and invest in a world-class facility to provide our valued passengers with an experience that is appropriate for Canada’s largest airport.”

Those who managed to travel in the past few months were faced with long wait times, and for a lack of a better word, chaos – as they travelled through Pearson. The return to normalcy was faced with an increase in travel this past summer so much so that Pearson warned travellers of longer than normal wait times.

According to the GTAA, the revenue generated will support the operation of the airport and a few new upgrades including, the installation of new inbound baggage carrousels, more cleaning and passenger service providers, renovations to airport amenities across both terminals, refurbishing escalators and moving walkways, and much more.

But for now, whatever travel plans you have before the year ends, you’re in the clear. Come 2023, make sure to start saving your change.
