Here are the top Canadian cities that people moved to in 2022

Canadians were on the move last year, and some cities were more popular than others. U-Haul has released its report of the top growth cities in Canada for 2022 based on the number of one-way trips throughout the year.

The report, called the U-Haul Growth Index, uses transactional data to determine which cities and provinces saw the biggest growth of new residents.

It is compiled according to the net gain (or loss) of one-way U-Haul trucks arriving in a province or city, versus departing from that province or city, in a calendar year.

“Migration trends data is compiled from well over 2 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions that occur annually across Canada and the U.S,” says the U-Haul report.

The top growth cities in Canada for 2022 may come as a surprise, because many of them are smaller and less populated.

However, according to U-Haul Company of Atlantic Canada president Devin Mitchell, Canadians are leaving big cities in search of cheaper living costs.

Here are U-Haul’s 15 top growth cities in Canada last year:

  1. Chatham, ON
  2. Trois Rivieres, QC
  3. Sarnia, ON
  4. Quebec City, QC
  5. Kelowna, BC
  6. Syndey, NS
  7. Greater Sudbury, ON
  8. Brantford, ON
  9. Montreal, QC
  10. Chilliwack, BC
  11. North Bay, ON
  12. St. Thomas, ON
  13. Belleville, ON
  14. Saint John, NB
  15. Strathroy-Caradoc, ON
  16. Camrose, AB
  17. Nepean, ON
  18. Sherbrooke, QC
  19. Salmon Arm, BC
  20. Saint-Hubert, QC
  21. Penticton, BC
  22. Sault Ste. Marie, ON
  23. North Vancouver, BC
  24. Peterborough, ON
  25. Fredericton, NB

Surprisingly, the report also found that New Brunswick had the most movers of any other province last year.

New Brunswick registered the largest net gain in Canada of one-way U-Haul trucks in 2022.

If there’s anything we’ve learned from this report, it’s that big city living isn’t as in-demand as we thought.
