New Canadian museum has the world’s biggest Inuit art collection & you can tour it from home

It’s pretty rare these days that we learn about a new museum, but Winnipeg has just unveiled a stunning and very important museum dedicated to Inuit art from Canada and beyond. Qaumajuq has just opened in the Manitoba capital and it also happens to be the home of the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world.

Qaumajuq is a part of the ‘WAG’ or Winnipeg Art Gallery, and is pronounced KOW-ma-yourk. The museum’s creation is a step forward in museums acknowledging their colonial past (and present). And it will also serve as a new place where all are welcome and many stories and visions are told and shown.

Although this is incredibly exciting, we’re going to guess that most of us won’t have a chance to head out to Winnipeg just yet. And if you’re in a similar boat don’t fret because you can actually check out many of the museum’s collections from home. Plus you can also watch the official museum opening if you’d like to check out the building and celebrations.

One of the features that we find particularly cool is the visible vault. This vault houses thousands of Inuit carvings in a 3-storey glass vault that is one of the first things you see when entering the museum. But there are many other cool things about Qaumajuq and you can learn more by clicking here.
