Welcome to the first week of 2023, Vancouver! We made it to a new month and a new year, and we think that definitely calls for continued celebration. Thankfully, there is still plenty to do in & around the city this week to keep the holiday festivities going while still moving forward into an exciting new chapter. Without further ado, here are 10 of the best things to do in and around Vancouver this week (January 2-6).
We’re starting off with one of the first concerts of the year. The iconic folk-bluegrass band The Dead South is performing at the Commodore on Thursday, January 5th at 7 pm, so mark your calendars if you’re a fan of the genre! Fun fact: The Regina-based band was originally formed as a quartet back in 2012, and has now released three EPs and three studio albums.

Warm up with a bowl of stew or a hot sandwich at Lunch Bar, Kafka Gastown’s newest venture. And to sweeten the pot, the new Lunch Bar is serving up weekly stew specials for $13.50 – one vegan and one meat – both served with a slice of fresh-baked focaccia.

This is the last week that you can enjoy the beloved annual Dundarave Festival of Lights, so if you haven’t checked out their “Forest of Miracles” yet, consider stopping by sometime between now and Sunday, January 8th.

Tubing (or tobogganing) is certainly a rare opportunity for Vancouverites. Luckily, you can enjoy both on dedicated hills at Mt. Seymour. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a family-friendly day trip, or as a way to unwind after a day on the actual slopes.

This admission-by-donation gallery on the North Shore has two exhibitions to check out this month. One focuses on the city’s punk subculture, while the other is a solo exhibition from the world-renowned artist Steven Shearer.

That’s right, it doesn’t need to be summer to dive into a pool or get some laps in. Vancouver’s indoor swimming pools are open all month long, and it won’t hurt your wallet to go for a swim. Note that the Lord Byng Pool will reopen on January 3rd.

Getting a little bored of playing video games from your couch? Zero Latency has exactly what you need. This state-of-the-art facility offers a variety of truly immersive experiences, ranging from solving puzzles to a shooter set within the Far Cry universe. Think of it as your local arcade’s older sibling.

From Date Night improv to monthly standup sessions, House Team showcases, and more – there’s always something exciting going on at The Improv Centre on Granville Island. And why not start off the year with a couple of laughs and libations with your loved ones?
