10 of the best things to do in & around Seattle this week (January 31st-February 4th)

Welcome to the first week of February, ready to have your best month yet? There’s a lot happening this week between talks worth listening to, art shows worth checking out, and opportunities to eat you won’t want to pass up. So here are 10 of the best things to do in & around Seattle this week.

Ba Sa

Bainbridge Island’s Ba Sa is celebrating Tết with a special menu featuring Banh Tet (sticky rice stuffed with pork belly and mung bean), Thit Kho Mang (braised pork belly with bamboo shoots), and Salt Steamed Chicken with ginger scallion oil. The traditional lion dance to bring prosperity and good luck for the year will take place on Sunday, February 6 at 1:30 pm.

Virtual Silent Reading Party

For those of you that love the Silent Reading Party but are more comfortable at home, you can still enjoy the virtual version. You’ll also get to hear piano tunes from pianist Paul Matthew Moore as you read amongst strangers over zoom.

Becoming Abolitionists–A History of Failed Police Reforms & Vision for True Public Safety

This is SAL’s first free community event of the year and is highlighting Derecka Purnell, author of Becoming Abolitionists: Police, Protests, and the Pursuit of Freedom. You’ll also be able to hear from Dr. Robin D. G. Kelley, a widely published American historian and one of MCF’s 2021 Freedom Scholars.

Lauren Halsey: 2021 Knight

Lauren Halsey’s show is the Seattle Art Museums’ next upcoming exhibition. Her work “spans sculpture, installation, and architecture, including site-specific projects, particularly in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles.” Further, “her work maintains a sense of civic urgency and free-flowing imagination, reflecting the lives of the people and places around her and addressing the crucial issues confronting people of color, queer populations, and the working class.”

Check out a new vegan donut shop

Dough Joy’s Capitol Hill store opened its doors in January to a perfectly pink interior with a minimalistic design so that you can focus on choosing your donut. Because when there are so many options, it’s hard to choose. You’ll find all your old favorite donut flavors, as well as some new ones.

Groundhog Day

Ready to relive February 2nd again and again and again? Well, enjoy a good ol’ rewatch of the 1993 classic starring Bill Murray. It’s aptly playing until February 2nd so you might as well partake in the tradition.

See what’s new on Netflix

A new month means tons of new additions. February’s Netflix additions are a mix of new originals and some old favorites. While it may not be as big as January’s additions it’s still well worth checking out. You can also see what’s leaving Netflix in February as well.

Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective

This is the first major US retrospective of PNW-raised photographer Imogen Cunningham’s work. You’ll see “portraits of artists, musicians, and Hollywood stars; elegant flower and plant studies; poignant street pictures; and groundbreaking nudes”. It’s sure to be a beautiful show.

Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop

If you’ve ever wanted to see behind-the-scenes images of your favorite hip-hop artists, this exhibit is for you. MoPOP’s newest exhibit, Contact High allows visitors to see over 170 images of hip hop’s most influential artists like Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Queen Latifah, Tupac, and more. See four decades of photography, from the late 70s to today, documenting a revolution across different aspects of life.

Diana Al-Hadid: Archive of Longings

Al-Hadid’s work explores the interplay between the female body and the European art canon. The exhibition is showing sculptural works ranging from 2010-2021. If you’re looking to see new sculptural works this is for you!
