Edmonton’s winter scene is serving up more heat than a Tim’s double-double on a -30°C day. From cut-throat games to moonlit art to a slew of love-themed experiences, there are plenty of hibernation-defying things to do in Edmonton this week. And ahead are 10 of the best from the lot. Check’em out!
One of our all-time favourite ways to kick the week off is with an electrifying game. And this week we have two. Catch the Oil Kings battle it out with the Regina Pats on Wednesday. Then go ahead and swap candlelit dinners for nacho cheese waterfalls on V-Day as the Oil Kings face off against Red Deer Rebels.

This immersive exhibit is Edmonton’s answer to Interstellar – minus Matthew McConaughey’s drawl. Pose in LED moon craters, “float” in zero-G light installations, and then spend your included $5 voucher at Duchess Bakeshop.
Pro tip: Don your whites and transform yourself into a human glowstick.

Swifties, assemble! This adults-only night turns science into a Taylor Swift wonderland. Belt out “Shake It Off” at laser karaoke, craft friendship bracelets and indulge in “Lavender Haze” liquid nitrogen ice cream. Shop Swiftie-themed goodies at the pop-up market and explore hands-on exhibits. Mind you, no “Bad Blood” allowed.

The Art Gallery of Alberta is hosting an Adult Open Studio this Thursday. And if you haven’t already bought a Valentine’s Day card, you can make one. This laid-back studio session lets you dabble in different mediums – from watercolors to collage – with guidance from pro artists who promise not to laugh at your “abstract” attempts.

Two-time Juno winner Chris Luedecke, aka Old Man Luedecke, turns folk tunes into existential therapy. His toe-tapping melodies are proof that banjos can be more than just the butt of bluegrass jokes. Laugh, contemplate, hog down pirogies and have a quirky good time.

Winefest is back baby! And this time with over 300 wines from around the globe ready for tasting. Swirl, sniff, and sip your way through reds, whites, and everything in between. All while picking up tasting tips from on-site sommeliers.
You can also snag wine-themed merch and join seminars to boost your vino vocabulary.

Ballet Edmonton is breathing in fresh energy to contemporary dance with Escape, a program blending athleticism and artistry. Expect gravity-defying lifts, innovative choreography, and haunting live music that’ll leave you spellbound.

IFWC is your chance to enjoy a chilly but charming midweek escape that doesn’t break the bank. This frosty film fest screens indie shorts and documentaries on ice-carved screens under the stars. Watching stories from global filmmakers, including a spotlight on Alberta-made shorts.

Edmonton’s longest-running winter festival is back on and going strong. And it’s the perfect place for some free mid-week fun. Glide along the 2km skate trail. Marvel at ice sculptures. Watch fire dancers light up the night sky. There’s plenty of fun to be had.

An outdoor rink with stunning architectural views of the lit-up City Hall, free skate rentals AND live music (often). City Hall sure found a way to make our fave winter activity a lot more fun. And it’d be a shame to enjoy this every chance you get.
