These giant Canadian cliffs have literally been on fire for centuries

You may think that you know everything about Canada but do you know about The Smoking Hills? Well, you’re about to learn, and let us tell you, this hillside is certainly unique. And that’s because it’s been burning since at least the 1800s.

The hills are located in the Northwest Territories right on the Arctic Ocean and they were first spotted in Canadian history by the Irish explorer Captain Robert McClure in the early 1800s. We’d imagine the sight of these hills was a pretty big shock to early Europeans. After all, exploration was treacherous enough back then that the idea of something evil lurking in the hills isn’t hard to believe.

Luckily for everyone involved, there’s no evil in these hills. But there are plenty of sulfur-rich lignite deposits which has led to autoignition. And what’s even crazier is that the sulfur dioxide produced from the fires has actually changed the ecosystem of these cliffs. This has resulted in the hill’s bright orange color which stands out against the dirt and ocean.

If you want to visit the Smoking Hills you might have a hard time because it’s only accessible by floatplane, helicopter, or boat. That being said, we’d absolutely love to view this natural phenomenon if we could. After all, not many other places in the country have been on fire for centuries (luckily).
