The world’s first automated department store opens in Toronto next week

A new specialty store called Dori is opening at the Eaton Centre and it’s the first of its kind in Canada. The store is completely automated, made up of vending machines that dispense a huge variety of items, including treats, beauty items, accessories, and more.

“We’re all busy these days so we want to give you a physical retail experience that’s informative, convenient and on your schedule,” Dori’s website says.

The store is completely unattended, meaning there are no employees to ring up your purchases.

The store is opening to the public next Sunday, December 5th at 1 p.m., and the first 50 people in line will get a free gift. There’s even a $500 voucher up for grabs through a contest on Dori’s Instagram. You’ll find Dori on the lower concourse of the shopping centre near the Queen St entrance.

If you don’t make it to opening day, you’ll still be able to take advantage of the thousands of free sample items available each year at Dori. You can stay up to date on all of their upcoming free samples here.

Some of the brands you’ll be able to stock up on include Sweet Sushi, Maple & Leather, Carole’s Cheesecake Company, Clover Botanicals, The Cocktail Box Co, The Macaron Boutique, and Nosh Balls.

The store is just one of several cashier-less retail stores popping up around the city. Toronto’s first serve-serve convenience store and grocery market, called Aisle24, has opened its first location with several more planned next year.

If these stores are successful, this could be the beginning of the end of traditional retail stores as we know them today.
