The World Junior Hockey Championship has been cancelled: Reports

Team Canada only got to play a couple of games before finding out that the IIHF has decided that the World Juniors will be cancelled this year, according to reports. With multiple teams forfeiting due to positive cases and quarantine procedures, the plug has been pulled on one of the hockey world’s most iconic tournaments.

News originally broke via The Daily Faceoff’s Chris Peters, but has since been verified by other prominent writers and members of the hockey world, including TSN’s Bob McKenzie…

While Team Canada did not have to forfeit any games during the round-robin due to positive COVID cases, America, Czechia and reportedly Russia have all seen World Juniors games cancelled. With the increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant, organizers most likely are trying to avoid further outbreaks. However, no official statement has been made at the time of writing.

The World Junior Hockey Championship was set to continue with games in Red Deer and Edmonton until January 5th’s gold medal game at Rogers Place.

It’s a bummer (especially since Canada was looking particularly good this year), but we recognize that the health and safety of the players, team personnel, and any other folks who are affiliated with the tournament should come first. Maybe next year!
