This historic boutique hotel in Ontario is straight out of an art gallery

There’s a boutique hotel in the Ontario town of Chatham, a destination that’s been attracting new residents, with themed suites that are perfect for a unique weekend getaway.

The Retro Suites Hotel is made up of eight historic restored buildings to create a hotel unlike anything you’d expect to find in Southwestern Ontario.

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, the property embraces individuality, with every suite featuring decor that pays homage to the building’s 19th-century heritage.

Travel and art are at the crux of the hotel’s aesthetic, so you can expect striking visuals throughout the property, from themed rooms to eclectic common spaces, leaning into art-gallery vibes rather than conventional hotel decor.

But the style-forward approach doesn’t come at the expense of comfort. Each suite is equipped with practical amenities, including a mini fridge, microwave, TV, coffee maker, and more.

Standout rooms include the Rock N Roll Suite, adorned with concert posters and black-and-white striped wallpaper that will make you feel as though you’ve stepped inside a rock star’s own retreat.

The Easy Rider Suite, meanwhile, draws inspiration from motorcycle culture, with vibrant green accents and Castrol-inspired decor that give the space what the hotel describes as a “rugged and refined” look.

The property is also home to Suite 46, an on-site restaurant serving updated takes on familiar dishes and drinks.

Its location in the heart of downtown Chatham makes it easy to explore the surrounding area, too. Several notable attractions, including ARTspace and Chatham Capitol Theatre, are just minutes away, giving visitors plenty to add to their itinerary.

History buffs can visit the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum to learn about the area’s significant African-Canadian heritage.

And anyone in for a nature walk can wander around the 21-acre O’Neill Nature Preserve, just an eight-minute drive from The Retro Suites Hotel. It’s an ideal spot to spend an afternoon exploring trails and immersing yourself in the great outdoors.

If you’re up for a day trip, Rondeau Provincial Park is located about 30 minutes away from the hotel, too. With 11 kilometres of sandy beach, the park offers plenty of space to relax by the water if you want to laze the day away; hiking routes such as the Tulip Tree Trail and Harrison Trail are also a must-do here.

Another factor that may set The Retro Suites Hotel apart from nearby lodgings is its longer-term accommodation options. Its Executive Residences are located throughout town and cater to those staying for anywhere from one week to one month.

These suites are designed to feel more like home, with larger floor plans, laundry, and full kitchens, while still providing access to hotel services and amenities.

Suites start at $224 per night plus applicable taxes, and guests can book directly through the hotel’s website.

The Retro Suites Hotel is located at 2 King St. W. in Chatham, Ont.
