The CMLC has officially announced the design team for Calgary’s new arena

Wowza, it was a big day for the city. First, we got an official Stampede mini-donut, Midway drive-thru announcement, and now this. The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation has officially announced the design team to take on the brand new, multi-million dollar city arena!

Local company Dialog and international powerhouse HOK will collaborate to draw out and build the future home of the Calgary Flames. This decision could not have been an easy one. However, we have no doubt that these guys will find a way to somehow make the YYC skyline even more beautiful.

Dialog has already contributed incredible buildings to the inner city area including the Calgary Public Library and the new Calgary Cancer Centre, and HOK is by no means a stranger to the world of sporting arenas.

This global architecture and planning firm comes with a stacked resume. Not only did they have a hand in building the Detroit Redwings Little Caesars Arena, but they also worked on the Atlanta Falcons Mercedes-Benz stadium.

“The Event Centre will be a year-round entertainment facility that will serve as an extraordinary civic amenity for Calgarians and visitors to enjoy for generations to come,” said Kate Thompson, President and CEO of Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, in a news release.

Thomspon added that they too are extremely confident in the abilities of the chosen companies, and man, do we hope they are right.

The brand new arena will cost an estimated $550 million dollars and will seat 19,000 people, most of which (and we could just be projecting, here) have an emotional attachment to the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Only time will tell we suppose! According to the tentative plans, construction is to begin in August of 2021 and be completed by May 2024. Good Luck, guys! We’re looking forward to it!
