Welcome to the Calgary Group Chat. If you’ve been trying to keep up with everything happening in the city lately, this is your shortcut. The countdown to the Calgary Stampede is on, and the city is fully kicking into summer mode with plans everywhere you look.
Think of this as your weekly cheat sheet so you don’t miss what’s actually worth checking out.
Here’s everything you need to know this week.
Shake Shack is already making big moves in Calgary, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. Just weeks after opening at CF Chinook Centre, the popular burger spot is adding a second location on Macleod Trail. And wait until you hear this – the new location will feature a drive-thru, making it way easier to grab those burgers, fries, and milkshakes on the go.
We are 10 days out from the Calgary Stampede, and the excitement is building. Now’s the time to start planning out all the things you want to do, whether that is hitting the Stampede grounds, checking out live music, or just bouncing between breakfasts and street events all week. With all the food stops, concerts and last-minute plans with friends, your schedule fills up quicker than you think.
If you’ve noticed Calgary sounding a little louder than usual right now, there’s actually a reason for it. We are right in the middle of magpie fledging season, which usually peaks in late June and early July. During this time, magpies are leaving the nest for the first time, but they are not exactly flying perfectly yet. Their parents are basically on full alert while the babies are learning to fly, feeding them, and being way more vocal than usual to protect them. So all that extra squawking you’re hearing? It’s a mix of stressed-out parents and very chaotic teenagers learning to be birds.
The FIFA World Cup excitement is taking over Calgary, and one of the best ways to catch all the action is from the city’s best patios. With Canada set to play its third game of the tournament against Switzerland on Wednesday, there is no better time to grab a drink, head outside, and soak up all the energy around the city. Some of the best places to watch are the Ship and Anchor, Jameson’s Pub, and Elephant and Castle, all known for pulling in a lively crowd on match days.
It’s officially wildflower season, which means that the city is starting to light up with colour. On hikes or even on quick drives just outside the city, you will start seeing things like violets, wild roses, and bright patches of canola. So if you’ve been waiting for the right time to get outside, this is probably it, because this kind of season doesn’t stick around for long.
And that’s your Calgary group chat for the week.
You are now caught up on everything happening in the city, so nothing Calgary-related should catch you off guard during conversation. The city is only getting busier as we head further into summer, expect even more to keep up with next week.
Chat soon, Calgary!
