The BC Lions are giving away 10,000 shirts for Orange Shirt Day

Our hometown CFL team is making an honourable gesture at their next home game. To commemorate Orange Shirt Day and the first ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, the BC Lions will be filling BC Place on September 24 with a new, specially designed shirt.

The shirt, designed by Kwakwaka’wakw/Tlingit artist Corrine Hunt, is based on the BC Lions logo. But, it pays homage to the province’s Indigenous heritage. We think this is a really cool, really powerful thing to do! And, you might be familiar with Hunt’s work and not realize it because she was one of the co-designers of the 2010 Olympic medals.

Not only is this event in conjunction with Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, but is also part of the Every Child Matters campaign. The new shirt is a token of remembrance for the thousands of Indigenous children across Canada who were victims of Canada’s Residential School program.

Also, the September 24th home game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders will be dedicated to the Every Child Matters movement.

Not only that, but the first 10,000 attendees to the game will receive the orange shirt to memorialize this solemn holiday.

We think it’s awesome that big organizations like the BC Lions are taking a moment to respect this important day. And, while a day at the football game is always fun, it’s always good to reflect and learn about Orange Shirt Day as well as the Every Child Matters movement.

If you want to attend the game, check out their website right here. And, as always, be sure to stay up to date on the latest health rules and precautions!
