The $500M esports venue slated for Toronto doesn’t plan to use any taxpayer money

Remember a few months ago when we let you guys know about a crazy new venue from OverActive Media? Well, it’s still in the process of being planned but we do have a few new and exciting details. It looks like this crazy cool endeavor is even bigger than we thought!

According to Sportsnet, we now know that the project is about 60-90 days from gaining political approval and that there are hopes to break ground on the project early next year. You may remember but if not, the venue’s home will be on Lakeshore Blvd, just across from Ontario Place.

Additionally, and to the delight of pretty much everyone in Toronto, OverActive Media wants to fund the whole thing privately. This means no taxpayer dollars will be involved. That’s probably a good thing considering the project is slated to cost about $500 million.

While the project has a 30-36 month build timeline, we are looking forward to having this amazing new venue in 2025. Even though the venue will have a smaller seating capacity, it will really be all about creating the best experience for visitors rather than cramming as many people into one space as possible. It’s also worth noting that the complex will also include a hotel.

Considering that it’s the first new sports or entertainment venue built in Toronto since the BMO field in 2007 we’re pretty dang excited. Just think of all the over 200 entertainment events a year you’ll be able to check out. We’re talking sports, music, entertainment, and more. What’s the first show that you guys would want to see there?

We’re excited to hear more details about the build and if you’re curious you can read more about it here.
