There’s a riverside city in BC with a small-town feel and mountain views

Situated in the scenic Skeena region of British Columbia, there is no shortage of beautiful hikes and adventures to have in Terrace, from meandering forested trails to water activities on alpine lakes. Plus, the annual Riverboat Days Festival is coming up over the August long weekend, making it the perfect time to visit!  – AKA the largest community fest in northwest BC!

About the festival

The festival is the largest of its kind in northwest BC, and is all about celebrating the history, culture, and natural setting of Terrace (unceded Tsimshian territories).

The small riverside city maintains a ‘small-town atmosphere’ and close relationship with the Kitselas and Kitsumkalum First Nations.

From August 2nd to 11th, Visitors can enjoy a wide range of sporting events, live music and theatre, historical tours, and visual art displays – as well as the crowd-gathering Legion Parade, Beach Blast Volleyball, and Concerts in the Park at George Little Park.

Oh, and don’t forget to enjoy the festival’s first-ever drone show finale on August 11th!

Outdoor activities

From the trails to Gunsight and Clearwater Lakes or Kleanza Creek, to the many scenic trails at Seven Sisters Provincial Park, there are plenty of hiking opportunities to discover near Terrace.

And if you prefer to stay in town, there’s also the hike up Terrace Mountain, a local fave among residents that takes hikers to spectacular views.

In terms of swimming or paddling, Kalum Lake stands out with its crystal-clear waters surrounded by beautiful mountain vistas.

Camping & info

Campers will find over 100 campsites located 3.5 kilometres from downtown Terrace at the stunning Ferry Island Campground, a massive park known for its forested trails and unique tree carvings.

Ferry Island is situated in the middle of the Skeena River, accessible via a bridge. The river is also known for its world-class fishing opportunities!

Looking for even more activities to enjoy? Terrace is home to the largest farmer’s market in northern BC, and it’s open. year-round. What’s more, the City receives less than half of the annual rainfall that the coast does, making it a great place to stop at any time of year.

So there you have it, outdoor lovers! There’s plenty to uncover in Northwestern BC this summer, and Terrace is a great place to start your journey.

Happy exploring, and have a great long weekend!
