Watch the new ‘Superman’ movie in this vibey retro Alberta theatre

Have you been itching to see the new Superman? Now you can, in classic retro stylings.

The Wales Theatre in High River, Alta definitely takes the cake for the most vibey movie theatre in the province.

With a stunning nighttime neon sign, 1927 architecture, and an art deco charm, this cozy rural cinema offers everything you need for an unforgettable out-of-city day trip.

It’s also currently listed for sale at just over $1 million, so if you fall in love, you may have to vie for its ownership.

What to expect

The Wales Theatre was originally dubbed the Highwood Theatre when it first opened in 1927, nearly 100 years ago. In 1929, it became the first cinema between Calgary and Lethbridge to boast the latest talking-picture technology.

When High River municipality was devastated by floods in 2013, the Wales Theatre escaped the same fate. In the past two decades, the nearly century-old cinema has been restored and installed with new digital equipment.

The theatre today has upgraded seating that can fit 400 occupants, funky art deco-inspired walls and lighting, and a balcony that looks like it’s pulled from classic cinema itself.

Preserving Alberta’s independent cinema heritage

The Wales Theatre isn’t the only retro cinema in Alberta. There are dozens more, popping up in small towns from Drumheller to Coleman.

Alberta’s flourishing film industry and Canadian film enthusiasts are eager to preserve this cultural heritage and keep these spaces as they were intended to be — as independent cinemas.

Independent theatres are important for preserving cultural heritage and connection to place. One-screen cinemas provide an affordable, curated cinema experience that is close to home and easier to access in rural communities.

Purchase a piece of history

Although one-screen theatres are important community gathering spaces, the Wales Theatre is currently up for sale.

The theatre and main floor retail space could be yours to own for just over $1 million in High River.

Maybe seeing the new Superman movie in classic stylings will inspire you to take the plunge. We’ll see you out there!
