Chasing waterfalls: This breathtaking destination is an Alberta must-visit

When it comes to nature, Alberta has it all but there are few destinations that out-magic Sunwapta, a powerful falls located in one of Canada’s favourite parks.

Erupting with water from the Athabasca Glacier, this absolute beauty can be found not far from the Icefields Parkway in Jasper National Park.

Here, tourists and locals alike can get some fresh air, take photos and enjoy a 1.3 km to the lower falls or can check out the accessible route to the impressive 59-foot dropoff at the upper falls.

Upper Sunwapta can be easily accessed from the viewpoint parking lot, which is easy enough! The lower falls, however, will require that you head through the gorgeous lodgepole pine forest.

If of course, you’re leaving from Calgary, this breathtaking spot is a bit of a drive but it’s worth every kilometre. To get there, head west on Trans Canada until you hit Highway 93 North, then turn left at the Sunwapta Falls Resort.

If you’re leaving Edmonton, you head west on Highway 16 then eventually turn left on Highway 93 south, instead.

According to Travel Alberta, late spring or early summer when the snowmelt is at its peak is the best time to go, but if you don’t get around to it, don’t fret. Sunwapta is an all-season stunner, incredible any time of the year. You won’t be disappointed.
