There are ghosts all around us — maybe even in Okotoks.
Not where one might expect, but it’s possible when you consider the prominent transportation and ranching history that took place in the 20th century around the area.
If anyone should know something about the haunted history of Okotoks, it’s the Okotoks Museum and Archives.
They’re co-hosts of this haunted walking tour, along with the Okotoks and District Historical Society.
What lurks downtown after dark? That’s the question that will come up again and again on the town of Okotoks’ annual Ghost Walk Tours.
The town is located 20 km south of Calgary. In the 1880s, it was a stopping point on the Macleod Trail wagon route between Fort Macleod and Calgary.
The discovery of the Turney Valley oil field west of the town in 1914 spurred further growth.
With so many people coming and going, there’s bound to be a ghost or two that decided to stick around permanently.
The town of Okotoks is known to have a haunted and superstitious past. In the old days, with a lack of a hospital in the town, there were reportedly many deaths by natural causes.
Rumour has it there’s a spirit at the train station, and one that lurks in the hallways at Okotoks Junior High.
Several businesses and homes in the Olde Towne are also reported to be haunted.
The truth will be explored, and uncovered, with your trained guides on this hour and a half long walking tour.
Tickets are required in advance, but at a low price of under $10, you can hear the harrowing tales and decide for yourself if the rumours are true.
