The wild side: This Calgary island park has nearly 450 species of plants, animals and insects

Calgary is a happening place but as it turns out, human beings aren’t the only creatures to live and thrive here. From nightlife to greenspaces, we’ve got it all including a rich and varying group of feathered friends and creepy crawlies.

In a recent study, more than 500 biologists and community volunteers found that St. Patrick’s Island saw an uptick of 68% increase in biodiversity over the last 10 years.

According to Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), nearly 450 different species have been discovered which include 90 flowering plants, 263 insects and invertebrates, seven mammals, six fish and even one reptile.

“The increased biodiversity of aquatic species and rich community of plants and animals right in the middle of Calgary offers many ecological services that are invaluable to the well-being of the city,” said Dr Steven Handel, lead biologist behind what they’re calling and ‘ecological treasure hunt.’

“These services include moderating local temperature, improving air quality, cleaning water runoff, providing habitats for species, and enhancing overall ecological resilience in the face of climate change. The diverse wildlife and green spaces offer recreational opportunities, contribute to physical and mental well-being, attract tourism, and inspire art and design.”

In addition to playing an expert level of eye spy, those who visit the park can also have picnics, take in the view from an iconic hill aptly named ‘the Rise,’ stroll the many wooded areas, take in a show from the ampitheatre, visit the fishing cove and check out the public art instillation.

There’s 31-acres to explore, so check it out and enjoy! Island life is closer than you think.
