This Ontario town has over 25 km of outdoor trails & a panoramic lookout bridge

There’s a picturesque “stone town” in southern Ontario that has a rich architectural history and is filled with natural beauty. If you’re looking for a new small town to explore, make your way to St Marys, Ontario. Explore its downtown core and over 25km of outdoor trails.

The town of St Marys is located almost two hours away from Toronto, between Stratford and London. It’s a small town with a lot of charm – offering all the opportunity to indulge in its local shops, restaurants, parks, and scenic trails.

According to the Town of St. Marys, its historic limestone architecture has given this small town its nickname “The Stonetown”.

“Many 19th-century limestone structures still remain including but not limited to churches, commercial blocks, and private homes,” shares the site.

But that’s not all that remains. A limestone quarry that was abandoned in 1930 is now a popular swimming spot in the summer – Canada’s largest outdoor freshwater pool.

Though there are a few things best to enjoy in the summer, the town’s hiking trails are your best option for the fall season. Whether you decide to go on a walk, bike, or run along its in-town trail systems, you’ll be treated to a scenic experience of the local landscape.

Out of the four trails, the Grand Trunk Trail offers panoramic views over the town and countryside thanks to the Sarnia Bridge, according to the town’s site.

Though it’s only 3.2 km long, it started out as part of the historic Grand Trunk Railway. “In 1858 the GTR reached the village of St. Marys from Toronto and points further east,” states the town. “From St. Marys the line went west to Sarnia, Port Huron, and Chicago.”

Considering the town is definitely day trip-worthy, why not stop by Stratford while you’re at it? From the outside, Stratford resembles a typical charming small town in Ontario, of which there are many! It has heritage buildings, artisan boutiques, and historical landmarks lining the streets – transporting you to a different era.
