Ontario is full of ghost towns, century-old buildings, and even ruins. And that’s what you’ll find on our next Ontario adventure. Perched atop the Niagara Escarpment overlooking Georgian Bay, you’ll stumble upon a fascinating place called the Corran Ruins, which are actually the remnants of a massive stone mansion.
According to Grey Sauble, you’ll find this gem within the Spirit Rock Conservation Area. Spirit Rock and the McNeill Estate are popular in Bruce County.
This is a place where you can take in a gorgeous view of Colpoy’s Bay and hike over 5 km of trails.
“The ruins of the McNeill Estate provide a glimpse into some of the history of Bruce County and its settlers,” shares the site.
This place is like standing on the edge of a storybook world, where the pages open up to reveal the secrets of a bygone era.
The site was once home to Alexander McNeill in 1881. The land was developed into a beautiful garden with manicured lawns and orchards.
“The heart of the estate was the Corran, a 17-room mansion lavished with carvings, ancient weapons, tapestries and book-lined walls,” shares Grey Sauble. “The Gaelic meaning for Corran is ‘point of land running into the sea.’ McNeill’s mansion was modelled and named after his childhood home in Northern Ireland.”
But it eventually fell victim to time, and a fire turned this stunning mansion into the ruins we see today.
The fire occurred shortly after the property was sold to the Conservation Authority in 1976.
Explore the ruins and visit one of its most unique features, the spiral staircase that leads down to the shores of Georgian Bay. It’s a sight to see.
This is what we call a memorable day trip. Check out the Corran Ruins before the summer crowds.
