Honouring the Children: An important new art exhibit has opened in Calgary & it’s free to attend

September is here and as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation approaches, Canadians from coast to coast will be encouraged to show extra support for the Indigenous community.

While many events have yet to be announced for Calgary, those interested in commemorating the event early or just throughout the month, are encouraged to visit Sparrow Artspace for an immersive experience aptly named, ‘Honouring the Children’.

Featuring an artist residency and exhibit, workshops, and an interactive community art project, Honouring the Children is meant to recognize the lost children and survivors of residential schools and will be open to the public for an entire month leading up to the Pokaiks 5th annual walk and gathering.

Held on the 30th, this particular walk will be in alignment with Orange Shirt Day and, of course, National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.

“Embracing the spirit of togetherness, we eagerly anticipate the participation of the community in reconciliACTION as they explore our new art exhibit and residency at Sparrow Artspace,” said Diana Frost, founder of CIF Reconciliation Society.

“The myriad ways in which Calgarians can rally behind Indigenous communities, by engaging in the richness of our heritage, culture and art, as well as by participating in this year’s walk, beckon us all to unite in a shared commitment to forge a brighter, more harmonious future, while also acknowledging the realities of the past.”

If you’d like to attend the exhibit you can do so between 11 am and 6 pm, Thursdays through to Saturday at the address below.

Additionally, the walk on the 30th will begin at 11 am at City Hall and will follow a route along Stephen Avenue before concluding at Shaw Millenium Park.

Following this, there will be traditional drumming and performances, remarks from members of the Indigenous community, local vendors, and food.
