Almost all of southern Ontario is under weather alerts right now

Buckle up, friends. We’re in for a doozy of a freezing rain storm here in southern Ontario. Environment Canada has issued special weather statements and warnings in almost the entire region today, including parts of the GTA.

According to the weather statements, “significant rainfall” is expected to begin this afternoon with up to 20 mm possible in York, Durham, Halton, and Peel regions.

“The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall,”  the warning says. As for regions outside of the GTA, including cottage country, “significant ice accretion” is expected as a result of heavy freezing rain today and tonight.

The Weather Network says the combination of milder temperatures and rainfall is putting certain regions at risk of floods.

“Any additional rainfall combined with saturated ground, snowmelt, and ice jams on local waterways will lead to flooding concerns over the next couple of days,” the outlet says.

Environment Canada is warning residents in affected areas to stay mindful of slippery and icy surfaces, including parking lots, walkways and even highways.

“Beware of branches or electrical wires that could break under the weight of ice. Utility outages may occur,” says the warning.

Here’s to hoping that the early spring Ontario’s groundhog predicted is just around the corner.
