Sooke, British Columbia is where the rainforest meets the sea, with plenty of natural wonders worth exploring before summer’s end.
This includes a series of deep, naturally polished rock pools and potholes carved out by ancient glaciers into the bedrock of the Sooke River.
Visitors of Sooke can see them up close and personal at the Sooke Potholes Provincial Park (not to be confused with Sooke Potholes Regional Park), which is now open as of August 15th.
According to BC Parks, glacial movement during the last ice age 15,000 years ago carved a deep path into the natural bedrock, leaving the fascinating, crystal-clear potholes that we see today.
Consider the small, quiet community of Sooke the uncrowded alternative to Victoria. Situated 45 minutes away by car from our province’s capital, the vibrant district is home to a plethora of outdoor recreation opportunities, including fishing, surfing, kayaking, hiking, biking, and whale-watching, for starters.

Those looking to explore the views from downtown Sooke can check out Ed MacGregor Park, which leads visitors down an oceanfront boardwalk trail to a scenic pier and amphitheatre.
To that end, the Sunriver Nature Trail is another great option when it comes to boardwalk trails. Here, visitors will pass giant old-growth trees leading to the ocean.
The nearby Sooke River is also worth checking out, as it’s a significant coho and chinook salmon spawning area, with catch-and-release fishing opportunities. It’s also a great spot to catch the annual salmon run!
