Alberta has a ‘pumpkin capital’ & they host the cutest fall fair

Looking for an autumnal adventure straight out of a Hallmark movie? Smoky Lake, Alberta is a colourful town that comes to life in the fall.

The Pumpkin Capital of Alberta

Located northeast of Edmonton, this charming destination is small with just over 1,000 people but hosts a mighty festival attended by over 10,000 from far and wide.

Described as offering the “same services of the city without the lineups or traffic,” they host several events from Heritage Days to the Smoky Lake Stampede, but their Pumpkin Fair and Great White North Weigh-Off is certainly the largest.

The Pumpkin Fair and Weigh-Off

Set to take place on October 4th,5th, and 6th, of 2024, guests will be encouraged to ‘gourd big, or gourd home.’

“Immerse yourself in a weekend of festivities, food, and family fun at the Pumpkin Fair,” Travel Lakeland explains.

“From thrilling harvest experiences to lively dances and artisan markets, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Explore our town’s charm, savour local flavours, and be sure to witness the Great White North Pumpkin Weight Off – where colossal pumpkins compete for top honours. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable experience!”

With a harvest celebration, pancake breakfasts, live music, bouncy castles, and sometimes-record-setting pumpkins, there will be plenty to see, even more to do, and a ton of photo opportunities no matter your age.
