These small towns in Ontario feel like stepping into a Hallmark movie

Cue the holiday music! It’s that time of year. The time to cozy up to feel-good movies, aka Hallmark movies. They’re wonderfully cheesy, ultra comforting, funny, and an essential part of getting into the holiday spirit. While watching Hallmark movies is pretty great, experiencing them is even better. Ontario is filled with small towns that feel like stepping into one, and in fact, a handful of Hallmark films have been shot in some of these towns, too.

Almonte

I had to mention Almonte because it’s known as “Mini Hollywood North” for all the movies shot there, including a list of Hallmark ones.

Some of them include A Novel Noel, Christmas by Design, A Christmas Stray, and A Chance at Christmas.

Get cozy with a drink and some food after you’ve explored The Sterling. I recommend the duck wings and blueberry bourbon smash.

Elora

Known as Ontario’s most beautiful village, Elora transforms into a winter wonderland during the holidays.

There’s a festive winter market that runs this time of year and plenty of shopping along the downtown strip.

A stay at the Elora Mill or The Aryshire is a must, as is dinner at The Lobby Bar. 

Niagara-on-the-Lake

One of my favourite spots in the province truly does feel like you’ve been transported into a movie.

The historic buildings, the local shops, and the friendly people all make Niagara-on-the-Lake feel magical, especially this time of year.

Hopefully, your Hallmark movie dreams involve wine, because there are plenty of places you can get a glass:

• Trius Winery
• Jackson Triggs Winery
• Château des Charmes
• The Lakeview Wine Co.

Just to name a few.

Amherstburg

This one is close to my heart. Growing up nearby, I can confirm that Amherstburg is worth the drive during the holiday season.

The historic little town puts on plenty of festivities this time of year, such as the River Lights Winter Festival and the Santa Claus Parade.

Be sure to grab a bite and pint from the Salty Dog, too.

Bracebridge

Two of my best friends live in Bracebridge, and it’s what Hallmark dreams are made of.

During November and December, there are lots of seasonal things to do, such as checking out the Downtown Festival of Lights and the Holiday Shop Hop.

And of course, no Hallmark-esque town is complete without its very own Santa’s Village. Yep, Bracebridge has one: A 60-acre theme park nestled on the Muskoka River.

Happy holidays, Ontario. One of these small towns (or more than one) awaits this season. Live out those Hallmark dreams, baby.
