Brighter days ahead: Sunset in Seattle will be at 5 pm & later starting this week

Winter in Seattle can be very rough for many. After all, it’s dark, rainy and usually somewhat cold. But things are about to change now that the sun will finally set after 5 PM in Seattle for the first time since November. Here’s a look at just how quickly the days are changing.

The days have been getting longer since the winter solstice on December 21st, 2023, but it’s been a little hard to tell. Starting on January 26, things should start to look a little brighter as the sun will set after 5 PM, with an exact set time of 5:01 PM.

“Ditch the switch”: Washington among four states looking to abolish daylight saving time

January 25th will be the last day we see a sunset prior to 5 PM.

We will gain around two minutes of sunlight each day until mid-March, when that time will increase to nearly three and a half minutes per day.

The days will continue getting longer until the summer solstice on June 21st, when the sun will set at 9:11 PM.

Speaking of sunlight, Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday, March 10, this year, but it may not be the case for much longer in Washington. A new bipartisan bill was introduced to the Senate to implement year-round Pacific standard time, and Washington Senator Mike Padden introduced the bill.

Not only is Washington pushing for daylight saving time to be abolished, California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho have formed a working group to propose legislation in their respective states to make the change.

If the bill becomes law, the change would go into effect on November 4th of this year, one day after daylight saving time ends on November 3rd.

Hang in there, Seattle! Brighter days are ahead!
