There’s a school in Seattle that teaches you to become a mermaid & classes are open to everyone

Have you ever wanted to play mermaids as an adult? Seattle is a pretty perfect place to do it considering all the bodies of water we have. And because our city also just so happens to be home to its very own mermaid school. Let’s check out The Seattle Mermaid School.

The Seattle Mermaid School is the PNW’s “exclusive portal to experiencing the underwater world of mermaids firsthand.” The school was founded by professional mermaid Olive the Alchemist, who has years of experience as a mermaid character performer with Walt Disney World among other professional aquatic skills.

Classes are open to all and range from beginner, first-time mermaids to seasoned pros. All classes take place at the Juanita Aquatics Center in Kirkland.

There’s a class option for those ages 6 and older and then there are apprentice mermaid lessons for those 16 and older. This course gets into acrobatic techniques that help you get more comfortable in a fin. You don’t necessarily need to be a strong swimmer to take the courses, however, you do need to be able to swim a regular pool lap and will be assessed before your lesson begins.

If you really want to go all the way you can get your PADI Mermaid Certifications with a day-long course that gives you the ability to certify your dives.

Classes start at $60 and are available depending on when Seattle Mermaid School is able to book pool space.

Of note, you are responsible for bringing your own towel, bathing suit, and swimming masks that connect both the eyes and nose. The school does have an inclusive range of tail sizes for adults and children to rent during lessons, so you don’t have to worry about getting a tail just yet!
