The Calgary Saddledome is opening a futuristic convenience store & it’s the first of Canada’s kind

Hockey season is just around the corner and we’ve got an appetite for hot dogs, fries and cold beer! This year, however, our stick and puck home base will be celebrating far more than the returning fandom! As announced by Calgary Sports and Entertainment, the city’s ol’ faithful will introduce futuristic technology that will change the way you shop for your game day snacks.

The first venue in Canada to test it out, the Scotiabank Saddledome has announced that foodies can soon shop until they drop then ‘Just Walk Out,‘ thanks to Amazon.

“Fan experience is at the heart of everything we do,” said Ziad Mehio, Calgary Sports and Entertainment’s vice president of technology and food & beverage.

“With this leading-edge technology, we can now serve customers in an expedited, more convenient manner. We are proud to be the first venue in Canada to collaborate with Amazon on this innovative convenience store, and we’re excited for our patrons to experience it firsthand.”

So how exactly will it work?

According to the Dome, the new convenience store will be open to all patrons on the main concourse.

In hopes of eliminating lines, customers will use their credit or debit cards at the store’s entrance gate, grab what they need and exit swiftly with whatever they want.

“The technology automatically detects what is taken from (or returned to) store shelves, creating a virtual shopping cart,” they explain.

“When customers complete their shopping, they leave the store without stopping to check out, and their payment card is charged for the items taken.”

Interested in checking it out? You’ll be able to officially grab and go on September 29th, 2023 when the Flames host the Oilers in a battle of Alberta.

“We are thrilled to bring Just Walk Out technology to Canada at the Scotiabank Saddledome,” said Jon Jenkins, vice president of Just Walk Out technology.

“This is the first installation of Just Walk Out technology in Canada, and we are excited to see this technology reach a new geography. With Just Walk Out, fans will find a convenient way to purchase items with a frictionless shopping experience so they can quickly get back to their seats and the action. This is just the beginning.”
