This map outlines fall drives in Ontario that take you past rolling country hills & lakes

It’s time to take the scenic route. Fall officially kicks off this weekend, and here are some colourful drives to check out this season! These routes will take you through Northumberland County, Ontario, known for its rolling country hills and glistening lakes.

There are actually a few driving routes here, and we’ll walk you through them all so you can choose your own adventure.

The best part is, they are also available on Google maps (as shown below!).

The Alnwick-Haldimand route

First, there’s the Alnwick-Haldimand route, which takes you right into the heart of the autumn colours in Shelter Valley.

There are hiking spots along the way to stretch your legs, and if you’re in the mood for some R&R, you can stop at the luxurious Ste. Anne’s Spa.

Brighton-Cramahe route

Next is the Brighton-Cramahe route, right off Highway 401. But don’t worry, because this location feels “a world away from the heavy traffic,” says Northumberland Tourism.

As you drive along Telephone Road, you’ll pass scenic country hills and a tree canopy “tunnel” bursting with vivid colours.

Be sure to stop for a walk so you can enjoy the leaves in all their glory.

Rice Lake

Next is the beautiful Rice Lake. At Close Point Road, you will embark on a memorable drive with views of the orange leaves reflecting on the blue water.

Plus, the lake’s islands are dotted with reds, golds, and yellows this time of year. It’s truly spectacular!

Ending at Warkworth Area & Trent Hills

Finally, you can explore the Warkworth and Trent Hills area. You will head south to Concession Road 2 and from there, hit Highway 29 for the short loop back to Warkworth.

On the way you will pass some amazing sights like an elk and bison farm, where you may spot these majestic animals grazing in the field.

There are many different back roads to take from here, each of them offering incredible autumn canopies.

While you’re in the area, we highly recommend making a pit stop in Warkworth, a sophisticated small town known for its thriving arts scene.
