Ontario’s second-oldest park is a winter wonderland with trails past 200-year-old trees

Did you know that Rondeau Provincial Park is Ontario’s second-oldest park? If you’re itching for some outdoor activity this winter, you’ll be glad to know it is open year-round and home to a ton of trails. Though trails in the summer might sound more enticing, they are just as wonderful in the winter. As for you nature enthusiasts, you’ll love knowing that while you venture along the trails, you’ll pass through mature Carolinian forest and right past 200-year-old trees.

This escape from reality can only be found along Lake Erie, surrounded by rare, centuries-old trees that are simply begging to be explored.

It’s about three hours west of Toronto, and according to Ontario Parks, it is the perfect southern Ontario spot for winter adventures.

For you bird fans out there, this park is a “world-renowned” bird-watching destination. However, in the warmer months, you may have better luck seeing a few of them in the area, so you may have to come back in the spring season.

But in winter, there are several exciting activities to do.

Spend your day cross-country skiing or snowshoeing along its trails. Although not groomed, visitors are welcome to enjoy the trails at their leisure. There are about 38.5 km of trails where you can explore the mature Carolinian forest. It’s home to 200-year-old trees, and its rare Oak Savanna.

If conditions are safe, visitors are also allowed to ice fish in the park. Ontario Parks asks that you please consult the most current Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary before your trip.

If Ontario’s forests could talk, we’re sure they’d have a lot to share.

It’s time to be one with nature and explore all of Ontario, even if it’s covered in snow.
